1st Day

Well, today was Luca's first day of preschool.  I would like to say it went well, but little girl was not a happy camper.  She screamed her head off when Ian and I said good-bye and made a quick exit.  I thought she would eventually calm down and play.  I got into the car and had a good cry myself.

Then I came home and made myself busy.  I took Tessa for a walk, made a morning smoothie.  And then it was time to head back to pick her up.

I waited outside the school excitedly.  I saw her teacher leading the kids out and bent down, ready to take a picture of her smiling face.  Except upon seeing her, I knew she was still sad.  She was crying.  She had snot on her face.  Her voice sounded hoarse.  She came over to me, exhausted, repeating "mama."

Her teachers said she had a long morning.  Lots of crying.  She refused all food and drink.  She did not want to play.  She refused a diaper change.

Needless to say, I did not get a picture of her when I picked her up!  Better luck tomorrow...or the next day...or the day after that...or maybe in a month or something.

Please tell me this gets better with time, because my heart is breaking right now.  How long did it take your kids to adjust to being left at school?

  1. Poor baby girl. :( I can't imagine how hard that must be, knowing she was so sad the whole time. But, from what I hear, it does get better. She'll warm up eventually.

  2. Oh Katie...it broke my heart just reading it and picturing her sweet face so upset....This week will be rough, very rough, I am afraid. But it will get better, I am sure of it. Alexa would cry for about 2 months when I dropped her off in the morning, but after the first week, she stopped by the time I was out the door. The first week is the roughest. (or it was with Alexa)
Plenty of hugs for mommy and daddy! and Big hug and Kiss from Alexa to Luca!

    1. Thank you, Shanna! I keep being reassured that things will get better in a couple weeks. I wouldn't mind if she cried when I left, but to cry for 2.5 hours was really upsetting to hear. So glad Alexa adjusted and hopefully Luca will do just the same :)

  3. Oh Katie, that is so hard but she will definitely adjust. You all have been so unbelievably close and through so much without any time apart. It is a normal transition but that doesn't mean it will be easy. Give it time and be strong for her. She will be OK. I know it is a very hard thing for you but all will be OK in the long run. The next day might be harder so be ready. Perhaps you stay a little bit with her to get her used to it. Discuss with the teachers and get their input.

    1. Mrs. Shea - I keep hearing day 2 is the worst. Sad face. We'll get through it though - just another transition we need to adjust to! Thanks for the suggestions!
