Luca

After a very healthy and uncomplicated pregnancy, Luca was born in August 2010.  She was diagnosed on day 3 of life with a Urea Cycle Disorder - specifically, CPS-I (Carbamoyl Phosphate Synthetase I).  In short, her liver is missing an enzyme that allows her body to process protein.  To learn more about how we knew she was sick, you can read this post.

As a result of the disorder, she underwent a liver transplant on December 14th, 2010.  She received 15% of her Daddy's liver.  She had complications and underwent two additional surgeries on December 19th and 20th.  A new liver allows her body to process protein and have a better chance at a long life.  The first year following transplant was anything but easy.

Other than missing a genetic enzyme, Luca is a healthy, happy girl.  Just looking at her, you would never know what she has been through.  Our life is busy- but we still have some normalcy.  She is certainly a special girl, marked with a heart, who has captured the audience and love of a lot of people.  Feel free to browse the blog to find out more information about our journey.  If you have any questions, please leave me a comment, or you may email me at frommagerkstoidos@gmail.com.
